Making Books with Kids

Thanks to Family Interest Magazine for publishing my article on making books with children (copied below).  I would love to hear from others about books you have made with the children in your lives — and ideas that you hope to try.

Creating Books with your Kids

Creating books with your kids is a great way to share a  love of reading with them.  Here are some fun starter projects.

1.  Toddler’s first word book (for ages 1-2.   Older siblings may help.)  Choose a theme, such as “My family,” or “My Favourite Toys,” and create a book, using photographs, magazine pictures, or
2. Your child’s day (for ages 4-7.)    Photograph your child in action every hour of a day you spend together.  Paste the photos into a notebook or home-made book.  Depending on the age of the child, you may ask him/her to write a sentence under each photo, or to fill in the blanks, i.e., “At 7 o’clock, I _________.” “At 8 o’clock, I ____________________________”. mixed media (e.g., fabric swatches or candy wrappers) and one large-type word to a page.  If your toddler has older siblings, get them involved!

3.  Family cookbook (for ages 7 and up)  Invite family members and friends to provide favourite recipes with ingredients, instructions, and a few sentences about why their scratch is special.  Younger children can contribute a favourite snack–Marmite on toast, counts!  Include photographs with captions documenting  the process and results—and any hiccups along the way.  Archive the family cookbook in a binder so that you can add to it as you discover new favourites.

You can use a scrap book or notebook to make books, or place the pages between two covers of card stock, and secure them with paper fasteners, pipe cleaners, or yarn.  The Making Books website at www.makingbooks.com provides clear instructions for homemade books that can be adapted for these projects.
